JotKulture’s founder, Jan Osei-Tutu, is a law professor with more than two decades of intellectual property advising and teaching experience. Focused on trademark law, fashion law, and cultural heritage, she blends rigorous academic research with practical legal experience. Jan has taught trademarks, fashion & design, international intellectual property, patent law, and contracts.

Jan was honored to have been among the group of invited discussants at the Harvard Traditional Knowledge workshop, where she moderated a panel. She also gave several presentations at leading institutions and organizations this past year, including at Queen Mary University in London, England; Cardozo Law School in New York, USA; and UCLA in Los Angeles, California. Jan was a panelist at the International Trademark Association Leadership Meeting in Miami, Florida, and a guest speaker for the Business Section of the Florida Bar Association, and for the Creative Commons Copyright Platform, among others.

Songkran has such cultural significance that UNESCO has bestowed upon it the prestigious status of “Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.”

A new cultural appropriation controversy has surfaced with Wide Open Walls over a Lunar New Year mural in Sacramento's Little Saigon. Criticism arose not just for the lack of Asian American artists' involvement, but also for the mural's cultural inaccuracies. For instance, the inclusion of a Kalinga warrior, tied to a Filipino indigenous group not celebrating Lunar New Year, was deemed inappropriate. This, coupled with the mural's placement in a Vietnamese American community, deepened the sense of cultural disconnect. Despite Wide Open Walls' claims of reaching out to AAPI artists and seeking community advice, local artists argued the efforts were lacking, underlining the importance of true representation. In response, Wide Open Walls has vowed to foster open community dialogue for more representative future initiatives.
