Some say that cryptomnesia, or "unconscious plagiarism," is a growing concern in the music industry. It happens when artists unknowingly copy melodies or lyrics. One commentator offers the example of Taylor Swift's hit "Shake It Off," which faced a lawsuit over its similarities to 3LW's 2001 track "Playas Gon' Play." The plaintiffs argued that Swift's use of phrases like "players gonna play and haters gonna hate" were identical to the lyrics from the earlier song. Swift said she wrote the lyrics herself, and this case appears to have been resolved

It may be a point of discussion in some circles, but “subconscious” copying is not a defence to copyright infringement.
